Astronomers have found a pair of extraordinary objects that dramatically burst in X-rays. This discovery, obtained with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton observatory, may represent a new class of explosive events. This image shows the location of one of these objects (box) in the NGC 5128 galaxy where low, medium, and high-energy X-rays detected by Chandra are colored red, green, and blue. The other source was found in the elliptical galaxy called NGC 4636.
