M16, commonly known as the Eagle Nebula, is an emission region of molecular hydrogen gas being illuminated by a young cluster of stars about 7000 lightyears away from us. The large pillar in the image is about 9 lightyears in length. This nebula is where the famous Pillars of Creation images come from. This image was taken as part of Advanced Observing Program (AOP) program at Kitt Peak Visitor Center during 2014.
