M53 is a globular cluster in the constellation Coma Berenices. It is an outlying globular, being about 60000 light-years distant both from us and from the Galactic Center. This composite was created from images taken in July 1997 at the KPNO 0.9-meter telescope, during the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program operated at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and supported by the National Science Foundation, and again in May 1998. Image size 14.7 arc minutes.
